This is probably stupid but, how do I know if my computer can hold 512 MB DDR RAM? 1024 MB?

see how many open PCI slots you have
I'm pretty sure you just check your motherboard...

You can do 2 methods:
1. If it is a computer from someone like Dell, HP, etc... go online to their service and support and search around there asking something like "Dell Dimensions 4400 RAM" or something along those lines. If that doesn't help, call up their support center.
2. Check the brand and nomenclature of the motherboard. Go to the manufacturer's website and search it up on there. They will give you the info that way.
Most computers (depending on the age) should be able to hold up to 1GB or 2GB (with the max of 4GB these days). Also make sure to notice what type of DDR RAM it is. (ie: DDR 400 PC3200 RAM).
Hansen, The PCI slots really have nothing to do with the RAM slots.
Haha, Hansen is so dumb.
Open the fucking case and check the ram bays, traditional and easy. If you're retarded enough to not know where they are located check this...

Each RAM bay (singular slot) can accomodate 512 megabytes of RAM, you can get 1024 meg sticks but they are fucking expensive.
So the motherboard above can accomodate 1536 megabytes of RAM, working the rest out is fairly self explanatory.
If your brand of case came with some pathetic hardware warantee seal, do as anarcky suggested.
