Every ones pc gets more slow with more crap we put on it!

When you first turn on your pc, if you get that egg timer pop up.. and stays there for a long time, then this will sort it out

All its mean is you have installed a few programs eg ms works, it will then hide its self in a START UP folder so it will pre load its self before you use it (but it make your pc slow, and its pointless if you dont use the pogram on that computer session.

So to sort that out just:

1) go to start and then run, you should now have the box below... Delete anything thats in there and type in "msconfig" and press ok
http://www.msfn.org/unattended/app_images/officexp/2.gif

2) you should now have this window "system configuration utility" open up, yours will start on the General tab, so click on the tab that says startup so you see the same screen as below
http://www.webterrace.com/tweak/graphics/msconfig.jpg

ok now all the items ticked are programs that are loading them self with out you knowing and slowing your pc down (and might even cause crashing etc)

3) all you need to do is untick any items you dont want! then press apply, then ok (it will ask you to restart) so restart your pc

4) once restarted there will be a pop up msg saying "you have used windows config to change...." look at the bottom it says "dont show this msg again" tick that and press ok...... now your pc should be much faster!

TIP
If you dont know what to untick its ok, you dont need anything really in there apart from your antivirus/firewall if your running any.

If you are running firewall etc and you dont know which one it is, its simple when you goto strat > program > then your name of your antivirus eg "symantec" then when your in msconfig on the part that says "command" it will tell you the address of the program etc C:\program files\symantec .......... so you no know its your antivrus so you dont want to untick it!

also if your using yahoo, msn or anything else then you dont want to untick them.

Its ok if you do fuck up as you can goto start > run > msconfig again and tick them all back in

hope this helps, any more questions plz ask

When you go in run there is no need to write all that

All you need to do is type

msconfig.exe

and then it will show up

So go
Run->
Then type- msconfig.exe

EVERY ONE, PLEASE INGORE THE COMMENT ABOVE

OperationFU urm...... what are you on about?
msconfig.exe is longer than msconfig................. all i said was type "msconfig" and nothing else (the picture above is an exaple of what might be in your run box)

Go to:

http://www.tweakxp.com

There's a ton of fuckin' awesome shit there.

If you want to free up a ton of RAM

go to run and type "Services.msc"

I suggest you read up on the services but most of those are useless and you can disable them. I freed up something like 25mb in RAM. I have a gig and that's not really much, but oh well.

Also, get a registry cleaner. When you install, uninstall, install, etc...programs you're adding keys to your registry and it gets bigger and bigger and bigger and slows boot time. I use Advanced System Optimizer, it's pretty good.

I cannot stress this enough to my friends and family. Its a must. Ad-aware 6 is also a good one too. you can get it a Lavasoftusa.com.

all of this can be avoided with simple RAM. Just add it in an empty slot and the slowness magically goes away. I'd bet most people running a slow XP are somewhere in the 128 MB RAM range. That's horrible and is bare minimum these days. You can download all the "free ram" programs or tweak XP to settings it wasn't meant for, but adding RAM is actually the easiest way to speed up a PC.

it's the best bang for your buck. a simple shutdown will rid your memory of all your shit

Ok Ferg you are actually supposed to have between four and six SVCHosts at any time. They are needed system apps.

What loki said. It executes different services at startup most of them are in DLLs (I don't know if you've ever gotten the error "missing .dll fil" :tooth:). All that is is just a lot of functions that are used seperately from a program or different ones. You do not want to get rid of them!
